🌸 How to Plant Ranunculus (Buttercups)
Ranunculus grow from little corms (they look like tiny octopus!) Don't be alarmed at their relatively shriveled and ugly appearance when they arrive, they are in dormancy but as they grow will reward you with layers of gorgeous, rose-like blooms!
Here’s how to plant them for success:
Step 1: Pre-Soak the Tubers
Before planting, soak the tubers in room-temperature water for 3–4 hours. This helps them plump up and start growing faster.
Step 2: Choose Your Spot
Ranunculus love full sun and well-draining soil. They can be grown in garden beds or pots.
Step 3: Planting Depth & Spacing
Plant tubers about 2 inches deep, with the “claws” pointing down. Space them 6–9 inches apart in the garden. (Butterfly space 12 in apart) In containers, you can plant them closer together for a fuller look
Step 4: Watering & Care
Water well after planting, then keep soil lightly moist (not soggy). Ranunculus like cool weather, so plant in fall (mild climates) or early spring (colder areas). Here is Southern California we plant out anytime Oct-Jan.
Step 5: Enjoy the Blooms!
Flowers appear in late spring, lasting for weeks. The more you cut for bouquets, the more blooms they produce!
